David McLean Shoup, a native of Concord, Massachusetts, graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2013 with a BA in Political Science. His undergraduate coursework included semesters abroad at Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso, Copenhagen University, and the University of Cape Town, with particular focus on Latin American economics, European politics, and South African history, respectively. At the end of a two year stint as an English teacher in a sleepy town nestled in the mountains of Hokkaido, Japan, he began a documentary film project chronicling the lives of North Vietnamese and American soldiers who fought on either side of a battle during the Vietnam War. David came to the University of Leipzig to complete the film with a German arthouse touch and to further his studies of the war’s cultural impacts on the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
