Johannes Barthel’s academic interests are focused mainly around the field of hip hop criticism and African-American Studies in general. He is furthermore interested in postcolonial theory and literature. The Caribbean and the cultural and creative engagement of the region with its colonial legacy are Barthel’s main focus in this field of study. He plans on going to the United States in the academic year 2008/2009. After earning his MA degree, he intends to work in the academic field and plans to do a dissertation on either hip hop culture in the US or Caribbean drama. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, playing basketball, and writing poetry, and he is also a voluntary worker at a youth center in his hometown of Neuendettelsau.
